Refrigerated Probiotics

Keeping Probiotics Live & Effective

Probiotics require special storage conditions to stay alive, stable & efficacious when consumed. Depending on the sensitivity of the strain, probiotics must be either stored in the fridge or placed in special protective packaging on shelf. Both storage methods protect them from the elements that effect probiotic stability;

  1. Moisture & humidity
  2. Temperature fluctuations
  3. Oxygen (introduced when opening & closing the pack)
  4. Light

Having pioneered probiotics more than 30 years ago, Inner Health are the experts in probiotic protection, carefully storing our range to ensure maximum freshness. Our refrigerated probiotics range are stored in amber glass packaging in the fridge, containing strains that are not heat-stable and hence must be stored in the fridge. Our shelf stable range are stored in Activ-Vial packaging, which has a unique double-wall of insulation built into each pack, making them more protected than other shelf stable probiotics on the market.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I keep refrigerated probiotics out of the fridge?

How long can I keep refrigerated probiotics out of the fridge? Refrigerated probiotics must be kept in cold storage, though Inner Health fridge-stored probiotics have been well-tested & show they remain live & effective for up to 3 days at room temperature up to 25°C, provided they are re-refrigerated & used within 6 months.

Inner Health also have a wide range of fridge-free probiotics, which may be more suitable if you’re unable to commit to keeping your probiotics in the fridge.

Do probiotics really need to be stored in the fridge?

Certain probiotic strains are more sensitive to heat than others, which is why they must be stored in the fridge. Inner Health have clearly identified the probiotics requiring refrigeration and store these in amber glass bottles (to help with light protection as well) in the fridge.

Not all probiotics need to be refrigerated, but those that aren’t must be correctly stored in packaging that protects them from external factors. Learn more about how Inner Health protects the probiotics in our shelf stable range.

What is Saccharomyces boulardii (SB*)?

Saccharomyces boulardii (SB) is a yeast probiotic strain of saccharomyces cerevisiae, proven to help with digestive side-effects (namely diarrhoea) associated with antibiotic use, & other health conditions that cause gastrointestinal complaints. SB is a relatively sensitive strain, meaning it is not stable in warmer conditions, and requires refrigeration to remain live & effective.

Are the refrigerated probiotics live after shipping to me?

We take pride in ensuring the correct storage & transport of our probiotics, so they are live, effective & stable through to product expiry. We follow a strict protocol where our fridge-stored probiotics are ice-packed and shipped with speedy delivery (3 days max. in transit) to minimise exposure to the elements (heat, light & moisture). Inner Health refrigerated probiotics are guaranteed to stay live & effective even after 3 days at room temperatures of up to 25°C, provided they are re-refrigerated & used within 6 months.

What happens if my refrigerated probiotics are no longer cold on arrival?

If your Inner Health refrigerated probiotics are not cold on arrival, don’t fret! Our fridge-stored probiotics are ice-packed for resilience during transportation, & the amber glass bottles further protect the probiotics from light & minimise moisture. We have also tested to ensure a certain amount of flexibility to cater to temperature fluctuations in transit, so you can trust they’re protected in Australian conditions. Simply ensure re-refrigeration & use within 6 months to ensure full strength.
